A head injury is a form of trauma that causes harm to the skull, brain, and the tissues of the central nervous system within. A mild head injury is called a concussion, while a severe head injury is commonly referred to as traumatic brain injury. These injuries are usually caused by a sudden blow to the head or body or by shaking that can disrupt normal brain function. The most common signs and symptoms of traumatic brain injury are headache, confusion and loss of consciousness after the injury and seizures occurring hours afterwards. Head Injury Treatment  The treatment of head injuries depends on the type and severity of the injury. Four main types of injury are usually found in the brain: concussion, hemorrhage, contusion, and hematoma. All four types can cause damage to the brain. Brain damage is also known as cerebral edema. The brain can be injured in many ways, including a sudden trauma, shaking or whiplash, a blow to the nose or facial bones, or a hit to the back of the head.
