Head Injury

A head injury is a form of trauma that causes harm to the skull, brain, and the tissues of the central nervous system within. A mild head injury is called a concussion, while a severe head injury is commonly referred to as traumatic brain injury. These injuries are usually caused by a sudden blow to the head or body or by shaking that can disrupt normal brain function.

The most common signs and symptoms of traumatic brain injury are headache, confusion and loss of consciousness after the injury and seizures occurring hours afterwards.

Head Injury Treatment

The treatment of head injuries depends on the type and severity of the injury.

Four main types of injury are usually found in the brain: concussion, hemorrhage, contusion, and hematoma. All four types can cause damage to the brain. Brain damage is also known as cerebral edema.

The brain can be injured in many ways, including a sudden trauma, shaking or whiplash, a blow to the nose or facial bones, or a hit to the back of the head. A head injury may cause bleeding inside or outside of the skull as well as swelling of brain tissue. There can also be damage to other parts of your body, such as your neck and spine.

Several treatments are used to help with head injuries. It is important to address the issue as soon as it happens and not wait for it to get worse.

Physical therapy is one of the most prescribed treatments. It can help the patient's motor skills, coordination, strength, and endurance.

A patient may then be able to do things like walk, talk and sleep better if they were able to complete their physical therapy.

There are three types of physical therapy: prevention, restorative and functional restoration.

Prevention techniques include exercises that will make up for a lack of activity (as from a coma) or conditions that cause muscle weakness or loss of balance (like Parkinson's disease). Prevention approaches also involve exercises designed for people who have had a stroke or injury.

Once you have fully recovered from your initial injury you should see a doctor regularly to make sure that there is no lasting damage like scarring inside your skull which may require surgery in order.
